Read This Before You Get Shot

(By a camera, of course)

1. Don't wear loud clothing, particularly if you're getting family pictures taken. We would all rather see your face and your expressions than the bold print or color of your clothes. Also, please no 'white shirts with blue jeans' matchy matchy pictures. I highly recommend using gray or tan as a neutral, then picking another color (ie. green) with everyone in varied shades of that color.

2. Consider where your photos will end up. Did you have a spot about the fireplace in mind, or are they for a photo album? Decide if you need more vertical or horizontal images. Let the photographer know so he/she is prepared.

3. Don't expect too much out of photo shop. A lot of fun changes happen during editing, but we don't create miracles. Bad posture and frumpy or wrinkled clothes are some of the few things that are uneditable.

4. Over do it. Smile like you're about to laugh (or like you did in the 8th grade show choir). Stand up STRAIGHT. Wear more makeup than normal (you won't look like a clown, I promise!) and use way more hair spray than you normally would (on boys and men too!)

5. Determine what you expect out of your photographer, then communicate those expectations before the shoot. Do you expect posed shots or candid, traditional or trendy? Do you like a lot of editing, or just enough to look 'professional'? Do you like artistic, edgy photography or more classic shots that you'll send to Grandma? If you can, find examples of the style you'd like and let the photographer know before hand.
